Never Thought I Would Do This!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Ok… I will admit it. I wasn’t too thrilled when Nikki brought Sam home from the La Porte breeders. But, after 6 months, Sam has found his way into the household and my heart. Not that I was ever thrilled with the puppy in the first place (still not in some ways), but it became a “can’t beat it so join it” situation. For the better, it is turning out to be.

But, today, a milestone was charted when I took Sam on his first geocaching hike. No one else could go this Sunday afternoon… Nikki had training at Dunkin to complete and the the kids were interested in other things, so I took Sam to Southwestway Park (southwest side of Indianapolis) for a 3.0 mile (round trip) hike to this geocache.

It was a thick dark overcast when we started our hike. Sam had to sniff every scent at every step but we eventually established a cadence we both could keep. The cache is hidden between two lakes in the southern area of the park. The trail passes an old, abandoned campground which has been reclaimed as a nature preserve. In fact, last week, when I was searching (by myself) for 3 other caches in the area, I saw two bald eagles flying overhead.

In the picture, the geocache is the small black box. It was hidden at the base of the tree behind Sam. The coordinates are N 39° 38.395 W 086° 14.781.

On the hike back to the car, we were caught in a cold downpour and became soaked almost immediately and the trail become a mud sluice. When I got home, I gave Sam a bath.

With the help of Sam for this particular cache, I have now found all 13 geocaches in Southwestway Park. With no additional geocaches to find in this park, maybe we should set our sights on Eagle Creek Park where another 13 geocaches await our discovery.

Blender Materials & Texture Scene

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

In my study of Blender 2.49b, I have been working with the Materials and Textures controls. For this scene, I was going for hot lava on the sphere and water on the cubes. For that “cut in half” sphere, I did a Boolean Operation and by magic, this object appear. Don’t really know how I got it, but there is is!

10,000 Pictures

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

This picture of Hailey, taken at the 2009 Round Hill Cemetery CITO event, is the 10,000 picture I’ve taken with the Nikon D70.

It’s fitting that the 10,000 picture is a picture of Hailey, since I bought the Nikon shortly before Hailey was born.

One thing I’ve learn about the Nikon D70, is that once you turn over to 10,000 pictures, the file name resets to DSC_0001.jpg. I guess Nikon didn’t think anyone would take over 10,000 pictures with the D70.

The Poker Chip Zone

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

It’s official! The Poker Chip Zone has launched. If you need to buy poker chips and cases, this is the site to buy from.

I helped the owner put up this OScommerce site. I helped out with the style definitions, some PHP coding, troubleshooting and image prep. I also wrote a script that displays multiple images of different chip colors.

I was lucky to be able to help on this site, since I’m responsible for developing an ecommerce site for Advantage. The goal is to have the site up and running by the first quarter of 2010.  Working on the Poker Chip Zone allowed me to peek around the OScommerce source code to wrap my head around the shopping cart process. Invaluable to me, since I was able to see how it works in the ‘real world’.

Wish the Poker Chip Zone and Shuffled Sports the best of luck!

The New Ipod Touch

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

At my birthday dinner at the Outback (10/27/09), the entire family was there. While we were waiting for our dinners, everyone was peaking away on their ipods and iphones and chatting and talking to others and texting and watching and sending. Expect for me. Since I didn’t have an iphone or ipod or even a scrap of paper to write a sentence on, I counted the slats in the window shades and the tiles in the ceiling. I decided then that I need to get an iphone or ipod so I can join in the fun and text and chat and type and send and doing everything else everyone else is doing. I felt so alone sitting there.

I did some research in buying an iphone. But, decided that the incremental cost to the phone bill is not worth it. Nikki already has an iphone and I’m waiting until the contract ends to get rid of the second phone and whittle down the cell phone bill. So, it’s not worth owning an iphone.

That leaves the ipod and the choice between the Nano and the Touch. I choose the Nano, since it has a camera, which was important to me, but Nikki talked me into buying the Touch. For some reason I assumed it had a camera, but it was only after I opened the packaged that I realized it didn’t. I was somewhat disappointed, but I already have a Nikon D70, so why do I need another camera.

I’ve had the  Touch for a few days and now believe that Nikki was right, the Touch is a better choice for me. Cool little gadget. Now I can tap and send along with the rest of the family! Don’t need to count the ceiling tiles anymore.

Here’s a picture of my Sweetheart. Took this picture in Traverse City, Michigan, on the banks of the Grande Traverse Bay.

The New Imac

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

When I tried to download Blender 2.49b to my Mac G4 at home and Blender refused to live on that machine, I realized it was time to update my home computer. I’ve had that computer since 1999. Back then, it was a screaming machine. It started off in life as a work computer at Advantage and I brought it home when Advantage bought a Mac Pro G5.

After the Blender issue, I started the search for a new Macintosh, researching the reasonability of a Mac mini, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Imac and the Mac Pro for use at home.

Since I work with a Mac Pro G5 Power PC (circa 2006) at Advantage, I knew quite a bit about the Mac product line. Of course, I crunched just about every number there was regarding buying a new Mac for home use, even going as far as combining a Mac Mini with a 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display!

Since Blender refused to live on the G4, I decided to spend money only once and buy the best machine for what I want to do, including Blender 3D graphics, Photoshop and photography, and writing and word processing, Itunes and podcasting and maybe movie making. So, the Imac fit the bill with the right specs.

But choosing between the 21.5″ and 27″ Imac was difficult, believe it or not. And it came down to the $200 price difference between the smaller and larger screen, since every other parameter was the same, 4G ram, 1T drive, dvd super drive, SD slot, firewire, ATI graphics card, etc… etc.

As Nikki will testify, I do not spend money in a hurry or in a rush or under pressure. But, while standing in the super cool Indianapolis Apple store, watching the guy swipe my card to pay for the super cool new Mac, I had an impulse to include Photoshop Elements, Iworks and Apple Care. And of course, a new Imac isn’t complete without a new Ipod Touch, 3rd generation, which is on it’s way from Kunshan, China, since I bought that from the Apple online store.

I believe I had bought at least 5+ brand new computers in the past 10 years for use by everyone else. I’ve always preferred the obsolete Macs that Advantage gave away for free. But, the G5 I’m using at work is still in good shape and more than enough for what I need right now. So, with all the other computers running ok at home, it was my turn to buy and use the new computer!

Pipe Fitting Image

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

I know it’s not much to look at, but this rendered image from Blender 2.49b took almost 3.5 hours to create. Granted, I was experimenting with materials and lights, and the T-joint pipe fitting took about 5 efforts to get it just right. I tried to animate the camera to do a 360° fly around but couldn’t figure that one (yet).

Published!

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I follow the Mad Cacher on twitter. He’s an Indianapolis based geocacher with a website devoted to the sport. Last week he sent out a tweet asking for 300 word articles on any topic related to geocaching. Accepted articles would become content on his Mad Cacher web site .

I wrote up a 300 adventure story themed on a recent caching trip that Stevie and I took to Spring Mill State Park. It’s really a flash fiction piece, since 300 words is quite condensed for a story. The article was accepted and I was paid $10 for the effort. I will most likely buy a 6 pack of the new Bud Light Wheat beer with the earnings.

How cool is this! I’m a professional author now! At least according to Steven King, who famously said that a professional author is one who gets paid for his stories. Ha!

So my first official published story is here.
