Lost GPS

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Recently, I read a blog post about a lost GPS, where the owner place the GPS on the roof of her car, forgot about it and then drove away. The GPS was lost. After reading the post, I made a mental note to myself to avoid doing the same.

This morning, while preparing for my 6 mile run at Craig Park (Greenwood, IN), I turned on my Forerunner 205 GPS and placed it on the hood of the Honda so it could sync with the orbiting satellites . Or course, I forgot about it. I didn’t realize this until I had driven about 5 miles and was near the park. I turned around and back tracked. At home, I walked on the neighborhood streets in search of the GPS.

Once I realized that the Forerunner was lost, I kicked myself in the ass for being so stupid. I was going to give up on the run and go back home to sulk.

Nikki gave me the Forerunner in the Spring of 2006 and I had become attached to it. The Forerunner was the perfect gadget for me, as I like to keep track of my pace, time and distance.

Instead of staying home to host my pity party, I drove back to the park to get my run in. During the drive, I looked intensely at every bit of debris in the road gutter that even resembled a watch. Maybe one day I’ll see it.

I used the iPod to keep track of the time I spent on the run. I ran for 60 minutes, so that should equate to about 6 miles at a 10 minute pace.

Forerunner 205

This is a screenshot of my Forerunner 205, moments before I cleared out the memory and reset it to the default. The gadget has been giving me a “Lap Data Memory Full” error message for about 6 weeks now. I’ve been ignoring it, believing that it would still record my total mileage and just ignore the lap mileage. But, after last night’s 4 mile run on the Banta Loop, I confirmed that it was not recording any mileage at all!

I was waiting to hit the 1,000 mile mark before I cleared out the memory to start over.

Nikki bought the Forerunner in April 2006. Although 883 miles might not seem like a lot of total miles in three years, this total doesn’t include the miles for the past six weeks, nor does it include all the treadmill miles I run. Plus, there have been a half dozen extended layoffs from running in the 3 years.

ISO Circle The City 5K

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

isoCircleTheCityThe ISO Circle The City 5K has become my first ‘official’ running event of 2009, complete with a sub 29:00 finish (28:58 to be exact).

The event started on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis early on Saturday morning (August 1). The 10K group started first, followed by the 1 mile Symphony Stroll and then the 5K group. As I watched the 10K group line up and start, I couldn’t help but feel somewhat down on myself since last year I was in that 10K group and this year I can only do a 5K. So, I’ve actually declined in my physical ability over the past year. Something I can’t be proud of.

But, my 5K run was good and I felt strong for the entire duration. After the run, I ‘ran’ back to the car (I had to park over 3 blocks away from the Circle) to get my camera. I ran back to the Circle to snap a few pictures of the crowd and of the statues and monuments on Monument Circle. I had intended to pick up a geo cache that was hidden nearby at Conseco Fieldhouse, but I ran out of time for that.
